Laura Ingalls Wilder once said, “You will be surprised how much of an adventure can enter into ordinary things.”
That quote comes from this little delightful book I received for my 40th birthday uh-hum years ago. It still sits at arms length on a table in my great room. In quiet moments it will often call my name, inviting me to once again to peruse it’s pages and remind me just how much I am drawn to the charm of simple things.
When I walked into my daughter’s home on Sunday afternoon, I my eyes beheld both charm and simple hanging from an ordinary rope.
Using white paper bags and hand-lettered homemade tags, she created a visually delightful advent calendar for her family. The bag holds a small chocolate treat for each member of the family. And when she knows guests will be visiting on a certain day, enough treats are somehow (secretly) added to the bag so everyone gets one!
Not only does this creative advent calendar serve as a countdown for her sons as they anticipate celebrating Jesus’ birthday, but an intentional reminder to be present to each other as a family during these busy days leading up to Christmas Day.
They do that by taking an Instax snapshot to capture a daily and ordinary family moment (as well as that day’s bag)—and then hang the picture back on the clothespin that the bag once occupied.
We were there to open up bag #10—and here is our picture with our precious grand-boys before opening the bag and sharing the yummy goodies inside. (I placed my pen beside the picture so that you could get better perspective of the size of the Polaroid picture.) After Christmas, Megan will add these photos to a small memory journal she writes in each day so that later in the year—and in Christmas’ to come—they can look back on their advent journeys together.
The days are passing quickly, and it won’t be long before they come to the end of their rope! But what a sweet charming and simple journey it will have been.
